An Open-Ended Problem
I came back from a session at NCTM - San Antonio with some great ideas for a set of problems with no specific correct solution.
We had been challenged to provide some realistic problems that students could solve in different ways and come to different conclusions.
The model here was that of consultants bidding on a project. There are lots of considerations, and cost is only one of them.
The problem-solving process required students to identify assumptions and defend conclusions to a group.
There were two different projects done concurrently by different groups.
One group worked with a fencing problem, and another group dealt with the spread of a contagious disease.
